If you are befuddled, your mind is in a — completely confused, unable to think in a straight line. A long exam paper can leave you befuddled; so can jet lag, or a set of instructions with too many arrows. The word is informal and a bit colourful; it is kinder and funnier than “stupid.” Though actually it used to carry a smell of drink: to someone was to confuse them, often with alcohol, and a befuddled man might have been simply drunk. That older colour is still in the background, but today you can be befuddled by maths, by love, or by a new phone, with no beer in sight. There is a verb, befuddle, but the -ed form is the one you will meet most.
