    A beefsteak is a thick piece of beef, usually cooked in a pan or on a grill. In everyday English people nearly always just say steak; beefsteak is the fuller, slightly older or more careful word, making it clear the meat is beef. You may still meet it on a menu, in an older , or in a grand-sounding restaurant name. It is ordinary food language, not slang. Though actually, the same spelling turns up in other names — a beefsteak tomato is a big, meaty tomato — but here the word means the meat on the plate.
