In Britain, people sometimes call the BBC ‘the Beeb.’ It is informal and rather fond — a nickname for a huge public broadcaster, the way you might nickname a well-known institution rather than say every letter. You might hear ‘It was on the Beeb last night’ meaning a BBC radio or TV programme. Outside British English it is uncommon; learners in Taiwan almost always say BBC. The form is a clipping of BBC (the two B’s sounding like ‘beeb’). It was possibly helped along by Peter Sellers, who is said to have called the corporation the Beeb Beeb Ceeb on The Goon Show in the 1950s. You still write it with a capital B because it stands for that one organisation.
