A bedpost is one of the four tall posts at the corners of an old-fashioned bed. They hold up the frame, and on a four-poster bed they also hold the curtains or the canopy above. Modern beds often have no posts at all, so the word belongs more to older furniture, stories, and houses with antique beds. People also say between you, me, and the bedpost when they mean “just between us” — a slightly playful way to mark a secret — though that is a set phrase, not a new meaning of the post itself. The post is the corner support, not the headboard along the pillow end, and not the slats under the mattress.
