1. 1

A bedpan is a low, wide container that a person uses as a toilet while still lying in bed. Nurses slide it under someone who is too ill, too weak, or too hurt to walk to the bathroom. It is a hospital and care-home word, plain and practical, not rude in that setting — though outside a ward people may feel shy saying it. It is not a pan for cooking, and it is not the same as a child’s potty, which you sit on beside the bed; a bedpan is used in the bed. There is usually a matching bottle for men who only need to pass water, but bedpan is the wider, flatter dish for more than that.

組成bed + pan (here pan means a shallow pot, the old chamber-pot kind, not a cooking pan).
