A beaver is a water animal with thick brown fur, strong orange-brown teeth, and a wide flat tail that looks a bit like a . It lives beside rivers and lakes, cuts down trees with those teeth, and builds a dam and a lodge — a home of sticks and mud in the water. The dictionary often says “North American,” and the animal people picture is often the North American beaver; though actually beavers also live in Europe and parts of Asia. They do not eat wood as we eat bread. They eat bark, leaves, and water plants; the cutting is as much for building as for food. The tail is the giveaway: an is longer and sleeker, a rat is small, and neither has that broad flat tail. Because beavers work and work at their dams, English also uses the animal in friendly talk: an eager beaver is someone almost too keen to help, and to beaver away is to keep working hard. Those are stretches from the animal, not a different creature. The word itself is very old, from Old English, and cousins of it turn up in many European languages.
