To beautify someone or something is to make them more beautiful — to add care, order, or charm so they look better than before. We beautify streets with trees and lights, beautify a room with paint, beautify a park with flowers. That is how the word is most at home: places, rooms, towns, and official projects (“a plan to beautify the river bank”). You can beautify a person, though actually that use sounds a little grand, like a speech or an old advertisement. For a face we more often say do someone’s makeup, or make someone look nice. Beautify does not mean “put on makeup” by itself, and it does not mean “become beautiful on your own” — the verb is something you do to someone or something. It is ordinary-to-formal: fine in news, school writing, and city posters; a bit stiff in chat if you only mean “tidy up.”
組成From Middle English beutifien, from Old French beaute (“beauty”), from Latin bellus (“beautiful, fine”), plus -ify, from Latin facio (“make”). In the living word you can still hear beauty + -ify (“make”).
