Beaujolais is a French red wine from the Beaujolais area, made mainly from the Gamay grape. It is usually light in colour and taste, often fruity, and people sometimes serve it a little cooler than a heavy red. The name everyone hears in shops is Beaujolais Nouveau: very young wine, released with a lot of fuss on the third Thursday of November. That is real wine, but it is the loud, party face of the region. There are also more serious Beaujolais wines from named villages (the crus), which can taste deeper and are meant to last longer. In everyday English, though, Beaujolais often just means “that light French red,” and in Taiwan it often means the nouveau in particular. It is a drink name, not a person.
