A beat-up car, bike, bag, or sofa is old and in bad condition. It looks as if life has knocked it about: dents, scratches, paint, parts that do not sit quite right. The word is informal, and it is kinder than wreck — a beat-up thing can still work; it just looks tired. You put it before the noun: a beat-up van, my beat-up guitar. American English uses it a lot; British speakers may say or clapped-out for the same idea. Though actually, this adjective has drifted away from the verb it comes from. To beat someone up is to hit them hard. A beat-up car has not been in a fight, not necessarily. It has just been used until it looks rough. People say it with a mix of complaint and affection: 'my beat-up old car still gets me there.'
