A beagle is a smallish hunting dog with short legs, long soft ears, and smooth fur, often white with black and brown patches. People bred beagles to hunt rabbits and hares by smell: they follow a trail with their noses to the ground and can be very noisy about it. Today many families keep them as pets because they are friendly and cheerful, though actually they were made to work with their noses, so they may wander if they catch a smell. You will also see beagles as detection dogs in airports. The name is famous from the cartoon dog Snoopy, who is a beagle. Informal, everyday, not a technical breed-show word unless you are among dog people.
組成Origin is not sure. One idea traces it to old French for someone who goes about with their mouth open (the dog bays). Another idea says it was reshaped from beadle, in the sense of a constable who sniffs things out. Scholars do not agree, so treat both as “maybe,” not fact. French bigle for this dog was borrowed from English, not the other way round.
