Bavaria is a large state in the south-east of Germany. Its capital is Munich. In German the same place is called Bayern, which is why football fans talk about Bayern Munich — they are not naming a different land. English books sometimes call it a province, though actually in Germany it is a state, and many people who live there feel it is almost a country of its own, with its own food, festivals, church life, and proud ways. It has big cities, farms, and high mountains along the Alps. Outsiders often picture beer, sausages, and mountain dress; that picture is not false, but it is only one corner of a modern, busy place. On a map, Bavaria is part of Germany, not a separate country — even when Bavarians joke that Berlin is far away in every sense.
組成The English name comes from New Latin Bavaria, from older Latin Baioaria, from Latin Boiuvarii, literally “Boii settlers”. The first part is usually tied to the Boii, a people whose name is thought to mean “cattle owners”, from an old Celtic word for cow, plus a Germanic word for settler. Another scholar, Pokorny, argued the first part meant “warrior” instead, from a root meaning “to hit or beat” — so the deep story is not fully settled. The name was taken up by the Marcomanni after they defeated the Boii and settled in Bohemia and parts of what we now call Bavaria. In ordinary English it is simply the name of that German state.
