Bauxite is the soft, often rock that we get aluminium from. Miners dig it up; factories then cook and treat it until the metal comes out. It is not the metal itself — that is aluminium (Americans say aluminum). You meet the word in geography and science class more than in everyday talk. English speakers say the x as /ks/ (BAWK-site), which is a spelling pronunciation: we read the letters rather than keeping the French sound of the place it is named after.
