A baton is a stick, and which stick depends on who's holding it: in a relay race, runners pass a baton to each other; a conductor holds a baton to lead an orchestra; a police officer may carry a baton as a short stick for protection. All these are the same word because they're all a stick used to lead, hit, or hand something over.
