Bathos is a sudden fall in writing, a play, or a speech: you are in something beautiful, moral, or serious — and then it drops, with a bump, into something ordinary, silly, or small. A love scene that ends with a shopping list; a grave speech that suddenly talks about lost socks — that crash is bathos. Writers sometimes do it on purpose, for a laugh. Sometimes it happens by accident, and the big feeling dies. It is a literary word; you will meet it in reviews and class, not at the dinner table. The Greek word meant “depth”; an English writer, Alexander Pope, used it in a mocking way — not real depth, but a fall into the shallows.
