Bathing, in this sense, is the activity of swimming outdoors — in the sea, a river, or a lake — for pleasure, not washing your body in a bathroom. This use is especially British. A bathing beach is a swimming beach; a bathing costume is a ; a sign that says “No bathing” means you must not go into the water. Americans usually just say swimming. Though actually, English also uses bathing for washing in a tub, so the surrounding words tell you which one it is: sea, lake, and costume point to swimming; bath, soap, and bathroom point to washing. Older holiday writing is full of “sea bathing.”
