1. 1

A basset is a hunting dog with a long body, very short legs, and long hanging ears. People often say basset hound for the same animal — that fuller name is what you will hear most. It was bred to hunt by smell, close to the ground; those short legs keep the nose near the earth. The face can look a little sad and a little funny at the same time. It is a countable noun: a basset, two bassets. You will meet it around dogs and in children’s books more than in formal writing. There is another old word spelled the same, a card game, but this entry is the dog.

組成For this short-legged hunting dog, the name fits French basset, from bas, “low” — a low dog. The spelling also has a recorded path from French bassette, from Italian bassetta, which belongs with an old card game of the same spelling, not with this animal.
