In old European stories, a basilisk is an imaginary snake-like monster. People said it was so dangerous that if it looked at you, you died. Some tales also gave it poison breath. treated it as a kind of king of snakes, which is why a “king” sits inside the name. You will meet the word in legends, fantasy books, and games, not in real nature — there is no such animal. The tidy picture is a snake with a deadly stare; the messy truth is that the stories probably grew from real cobras. Some cobras have marks on the head that look a little like a crown, and some can spit venom toward the eyes from far away. That would feel, to someone watching, like a look that can kill. People sometimes stretch the word for any idea that “hurts you if you even look at it,” but this entry is the creature in the stories.
組成From Ancient Greek basilískos, “little king” or “chieftain,” from basileús, “king.” It passed into Latin as basiliscus, then Old French basilique, then Middle English. The “little king” name may come from cobra markings that look like a crown; the deadly gaze may come from a spitting cobra hitting the eyes with venom. English once had its own name for a creature like this (an old word for a marked snake), but this French/Latin name took its place.
