A barrel is a large, round container, usually wood or metal, wider in the middle than at the two ends — used for storing things like wine, oil, or beer. Because oil is measured and sold in barrels, you'll often hear 'the price of oil per barrel' in the news. 'Barrel' is also the long metal tube part of a gun that the bullet travels through.
