    A barque is a large old sailing ship with three, four, or five masts — the tall that hold the sails. Though actually, it is not just any ship with that many masts. On a barque, the mast at the back carries a different kind of sail, one that runs along the length of the ship, while the masts in front carry the big square sails. Sailors care about that difference; school books often skip it. The spelling barque looks French; American writing often uses bark for the same ship. That bark is not the skin of a tree, and a barque is not a barge (a flat boat for carrying goods). You will meet the word in sea stories, museums, and history, not in talk about modern ships.
