A barnacle is a tiny sea animal with a hard shell. It glues itself to rocks, to the bottom of boats, to whales — to almost any hard thing in the water — and then it stays. Once it is on, you cannot pick it off without a and a fight; sailors hate a skin of barnacles on a ship because the boat runs slower. Though actually, it is not a clam-like in the everyday sense. It belongs with crabs: it lives stuck on its head and kicks food into its mouth with its legs. People also stretch the word: someone who and will not leave can be called a barnacle.
