If someone is barmy, they are a bit crazy — not ill, just wild in the head, or they have an idea that does not make much sense. It is British, informal, and often fond: “You’re barmy” can be a laugh, not a knife. A plan can be barmy too. Americans almost never use it; they say crazy or nuts instead. Though actually, the “crazy” meaning and the spelling have a tangled past, which is why this word sits so close to balmy and still is not quite the same thing.

組成One old path is barm (the foam that rises on beer while it is still working, also used as yeast) + -y (having that quality). Barm comes from Middle English berm / berme, from Old English beorma (beer-foam; yeast), from an older West Germanic word; what lies behind that is uncertain, perhaps a very old root for boiling or brewing. Though actually, the “a bit crazy” sense is probably a changed form of balmy (foolish; slightly mad), with the beer-foam word pulling the spelling over.
