If you ride bareback, you sit on a horse with no saddle — just you and the horse's back. It takes more balance than riding with a saddle. You often see it in films, in circuses, or with people who grew up around horses. You can use it before a noun (a bareback rider) or after a verb (to ride bareback). Though actually, the same word is also used, in informal and adult talk, for sex without a condom. That second meaning is common in some places online, and it is not about horses at all. In a riding class, bareback still means “no saddle”; in other rooms, people may hear the other meaning first.
