A barbiturate is a strong drug that slows the body down. Doctors used these medicines to calm people and to help them sleep, and they are still used in some hospitals, for example around certain operations. They are powerful, and they can be dangerous if you take too many or mix them with alcohol. You do not hear this word much in everyday chat; it belongs more to medicine, the news, and crime stories. Though actually, not every sleeping pill is a barbiturate. Many common sleep medicines today are a different kind of drug. Barbiturates are one old, strong family of drugs, not a casual word for “something that makes you sleepy”.
