Having small, sharp points sticking out, like the wire fences called 'barbed wire' that are hard to climb without getting hurt. The word is also used for comments that are meant to sting a little - a 'barbed remark' sounds like a joke or a compliment on the surface, but carries a small, sharp criticism inside it.
