The banns are a public statement, read out in a church in Britain, that two people mean to get married. Traditionally a priest reads the names on three Sundays before the wedding, so that anyone who knows a reason they must not marry can speak. You publish the banns or read the banns. You do not “make a bann.” The word is almost always plural: banns, never bann in ordinary use. It is old church English, still alive in the Church of England and in some other churches. Though actually, many couples in Britain now marry in a registry office and never have banns at all — so younger people may only know the word from books, period films, or a village noticeboard. It is not the word for a casual “we’re getting married” post online. The idea is an old public notice, not a rule against something. That is why the spelling keeps two n’s and a final s: so you do not trip over bans, as in “the school bans phones.”
