Bannockburn is a village in the middle of Scotland. English meet the name because of a battle there in 1314. Robert the Bruce, King of the , beat a much larger English army. In Scotland this is a proud, famous story — the fight that kept Scotland free for a long time after. You say it roughly BAN-uck-burn.
It is a place name, so it takes a capital B. People also use Bannockburn as a shorthand for the battle itself, not only the village: “after Bannockburn…” means after that victory. Though actually, the village is still a real place you can visit; the name did not freeze in 1314 and become only a history word.
