Bambi is a Walt Disney cartoon film about a young deer named Bambi. He is gentle and lovely to look at, with big dark eyes, and the story follows him as he grows up in the forest. The film is famous, and many people remember it as very sad — especially because of what happens to Bambi’s mother. The name is a proper name (capital B). English took it from Italian Bambi, from bambina, “young girl.” Though actually, people sometimes call a soft, wide-eyed person “a Bambi,” as if the film’s look had become a type; that is informal and a little teasing. The thing students meet first is still the deer and the film.
