Bamako is a city in southwest Mali, in West Africa. It is the country’s capital and its largest city, and it sits on the River Niger. Always a capital B: it is a place name. English borrowed the name from Bambara, the local language, where it is written Bamakɔ. When people mention Bamako in the news, they usually mean the seat of Mali’s government, not a small town nearby.
