Balmoral is a castle in Scotland. The British royal family often stay there in the summer. People say someone is “at Balmoral” to mean they are on that holiday at the castle. It is a place name, so you write it with a capital B. Though actually, you may also meet Balmoral as a kind of hat or a kind of boot; those were named after the castle, but this entry is the place itself.

組成The castle name first appears in writing as Bouchmorale in 1451. One story is Old Irish both (“hut, cabin”) plus a second piece that is not certain — perhaps like Welsh mawr (“large”) and iâl (“pasture”). Another story is Irish Baile Mhóireil: baile (“town, homestead”) + mór (“big”). People who study names do not all agree, so both sit here.
