Ballyhoo is a lot of noisy fuss — excitement, anger, or loud talk — about something, and the word is not friendly. The speaker thinks people are making too much noise, or shouting about something more than it deserves. Newspapers and critics use it when they are tired of the noise. You can also ballyhoo something, meaning you shout about it to sell it or to stir people up. It is informal. Though actually, the fuss can be excitement or anger; what the word always adds is “this is too much.”
