1. 1

A ballpoint is a pen with a tiny metal ball at the tip. The ball rolls as you write and pulls a thin line of ink onto the paper. Most cheap pens in a pencil case are this kind. People also say ballpoint pen; it is the same thing. It is an ordinary word, fine at school and at work. Though actually, many people just say pen, and only say ballpoint when they need to tell it apart from a fountain pen (which you dip or fill) or a felt-tip.
