The Balkans are a large area of southeast Europe. People usually include , Bosnia and , Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo, , North Macedonia, Serbia, and the European part of Turkey. Some lists add more, and people argue about the edges. It is a piece of land with sea on three sides. Over the last two centuries it has seen many wars and many new borders, which is why English speakers sometimes use “the Balkans” as a lazy picture of nations that cannot stop quarrelling — though actually, that picture is unfair to people who live ordinary lives there today. Know the place first, and the old newspaper habit second.
組成Probably from a Turkic word; compare Turkish balkan, a wooded mountain range. It is probably not related to the English verb balk (to refuse or stop short), even though the letters look close.
