If you say something baldly, you say the true thing with no soft wrapping — no “I’m afraid,” no “it seems.” The report baldly states that the plan failed. Baldly comes from bald in the sense “bare, plain,” plus -ly, not from hair. It can sound rude, or it can sound honest, depending on whether the moment needed gentleness. Teachers and newspapers like it when they want you to hear that nothing was smoothed over.
