Balderdash is talk or writing that is silly nonsense — not a careful argument that happens to be wrong, but empty stuff. It is a slightly old-fashioned, even comic word; a or a newspaper column might huff “That’s balderdash!”, and if you use it today you will sound a bit theatrical, which is fine if you mean to. Nobody is sure where it came from. It may go back to a cheap old English drink of wine mixed with beer or water, the idea being that the mixture was a worthless jumble. Treat that as a “probably,” not a fact.
