A balalaika is a Russian folk instrument. It looks a little like a guitar, but the wooden body itself is a triangle, and it usually has three strings that you pluck with your fingers, not six. You hear it in Russian folk music, and sometimes in a whole orchestra of balalaikas. The word is simply the Russian name, borrowed as it is. In English the stress usually falls near the end: bal-uh-LY-kuh.
