    Baku is the capital of . It sits on a dry peninsula that sticks out into the Caspian Sea, so it has long been a port on that sea’s western shore. Oil under the ground made the city famous and rich from the late 1800s; you can still see that old money in its stone buildings. In English the name is usually said BAH-koo. Maps sometimes tuck it into “south-east ,” though what you actually notice is how far east it stands, right on the water. This entry is only the city.
