In talk about the Middle East and South Asia, baksheesh is money you hand over in a small, unofficial way. Sometimes it is a gift to a person with little money; sometimes it is a thank-you to someone who has helped you; sometimes it is a bribe so that a door opens or a problem goes away. English borrowed the word, so you will see it in travel writing and older books more than on a Taiwan street. The feeling is not the neat Western tip left on a restaurant table — though that can be part of it — and it is not always kind. Though actually, people use one word for a spread of acts, from charity to pressure, which is why a careful account lists all three. If you only remember tip, you miss the darker use. Spellings vary a little (baksheesh, bakshish); the idea is the same.
