Baize is a thick, slightly fuzzy cloth, almost always a deep green. The job it is famous for is covering a games table — , pool, — so the balls roll smoothly and the surface has a little grip. You may also see it on a card table, or lining a drawer so things do not rattle. It is a material word, a little workshop-like; people who play pool often just say the cloth or the felt, though strictly felt and baize are not the same thing. Though actually the name comes from a French colour word, bai, for the red-brown of a bay horse. Speakers long ago took the French plural baies as if it were the name of one cloth, and the green we know became the usual colour later. It has nothing to do with , the pale brown colour, except that the two words look close on the page.
