In an old castle, the strong outer wall does not sit tight against the halls and towers. Between that wall and the inner buildings there is often a wide open yard of earth, stone, or grass, where people walked, kept stores, and in a fight could still move around inside the wall. That yard is the bailey. A large castle may have more than one, one after the other as you go in — an outer bailey, then an inner bailey. You will meet the word in history books and on castle visits, not in everyday city talk. The tidy picture is a quiet green courtyard; though actually the real place was often busy and rough, with animals, workshops, and mud. The English family name Bailey often comes from this: someone who lived by a bailey, or whose work was there.
組成From Old French baile, a palisade or enclosure, from Latin bacula, the plural of baculum, a stick or rod. The first picture is a fence of sticks, then the yard inside such a fence.
