Baikal is a huge lake in Siberia, in Russia. People usually say Lake Baikal. It is the deepest freshwater lake in the world, and the oldest, so scientists care about it a lot. The water is famous for being very clear. It is a place, not a country. You will meet the name in geography and in news about nature.

組成From Russian Байкал (Bajkal), from Buryat Байгал нуур, “Lake Baikal”. A story that it comes from old Turkic words for “rich lake” is sometimes told, but scholars disagree; a Mongolic origin has also been suggested.

- Of the Mongall Tartars. The Mongalls are a numerous people, and occupy a large extent of country, from this place to the Kallgan, which ſignifies the everlaſting Wall, or the great wall of China. From this wall they ſtretch themſelves northward as far as the river Amoor; and from the Amoor, weſtward, to the Baykail ſea ; where they border with the territories of the Kontayſha, or prince of the black Kalmucks. On the fouth, they are bounded by a nation called Tonguts, among whom the Delay Lama has his residence.
