    Baghdad is the capital city of Iraq. It sits on the River and is the country's main city for government, work, and culture. In English it is a place name, always with a capital B. You will meet it in news, history, and geography. The city is very old; for a long stretch of history it was one of the great cities of the Islamic world. The English name is borrowed from Arabic بغداد (baḡdād), and that Arabic name comes from Classical Persian بغداد (baġdād).
