A Baedeker is a tourist of a careful, old-fashioned kind. The first ones were made in the nineteenth century by a German publisher, Karl Baedeker. They told what to see: a country's history, famous buildings, and other places worth a visit. The books were so well known that the family name became a word for that type of book. In English the name is usually said roughly BAY-di-ker. You will meet it in older writing more than in a modern airport shop, where people now say or travel guide. Though actually, in wartime Britain Baedeker raids meant bombs aimed at historic towns listed in those very books — a grim reminder that a can also become a list of targets.
