The Badlands are a stretch of land in the United States, between the southwest of South Dakota and the northwest of Nebraska. Crops will not grow there. Wind and water have cut the ground into strange hills, sharp ridges, and pale layered rock. It is a place name, often written with a capital B, and Badlands National Park sits in this country. The English name copies an older French name meaning bad lands to cross, which itself copied a Lakota name for bad land. Though actually, people also use badlands, often without the capital, for any land worn into this same broken shape, far from South Dakota. In Taiwan, the moon-like hills of 月世界 are that kind of land.
組成From earlier Bad Lands, a calque of Canadian French mauvaises terres à traverser (bad lands to cross), itself a calque of Lakota Makȟóšiča, from makȟá (land) + o- + šíča (bad).
