Badinage is conversation full of jokes — light teasing, quick humour, people batting remarks back and forth. English borrowed it from French, and it still sounds like a book-word, a little old and a little fancy. You might meet it in a novel or a review; you would rarely hear it in a shop or a classroom. The everyday twins are banter, teasing, or just joking around. Though actually, badinage is usually warmer than a fight: the jokes are meant to amuse, not to hurt. There is a rare verb too, but almost nobody uses it; the noun is the word that lives.
