Backstage is the area behind a theater stage, hidden from the audience, where performers get ready, wait for their turn, and where props and equipment are kept. It's also used to talk about anything happening 'behind the scenes' - not just in theater. 'Backstage drama' can mean real arguments happening between performers before a show, or more generally, hidden problems going on out of public view.
