When someone has been doing better — they stopped lying, they quit a bad habit, they started keeping the rules — and then they slip into the old bad ways again, they backslide. The picture in the word is plain: you had moved forward, and now you are sliding back. People use it about habits, about health, and especially about moral or religious life; a church may talk about someone who backslid in their faith. It feels a little heavier than just “went back”. You can use it as a verb (He backslid last month) or as a noun (a backslide). Though actually, a lot of everyday talk just says “he went back to his old ways”, and keeps backslide for when the speaker wants that slightly serious, almost moral flavour. The past tense backslid is the usual one; you will sometimes hear backslided, but it sounds less settled.
