Backgammon is a game for two people. Each player has a set of flat round pieces, and you throw dice to move them around a special board marked with long thin triangles. The aim is to get all your pieces off the board before the other person does. You can land on the other player's lone piece and send it back; that fight is part of the game. It is an old game, still played at home and in cafés, and people sometimes play it for money. The name is probably back plus an old English word for 'game'.
