To backcomb is to comb hair the wrong way — towards the head, against the way it grows — so it tangles a little and looks thicker. do this to give a style more height or body, then they often smooth the top layer so it still looks neat. British speakers say backcomb; in American English you will more often hear tease the hair. It is a salon and dressing-table word. As a noun, a backcomb is that same action, or the combing done that way.
