A bacillus is a kind of bacterium: a living thing so small you need a microscope to see it. This kind is shaped like a tiny rod or stick. Some kinds live quietly in soil or in the body; some other kinds can make people ill. Scientists and doctors use the word in labs and in medicine. In everyday talk, people usually say bacteria or . Though actually, not every is a bacillus — the name is for the rod-shaped ones, and for a group of bacteria with that shape. One is a bacillus; more than one are usually called bacilli.
