    Azure means a bright, clear blue — the blue of a sky with no clouds. It is a slightly fancy, written word. In speech, most people just say blue or sky-blue; azure turns up in poems, paint names, flags, and old-fashioned descriptions. In the language of coats of arms (the pictures on old family shields), azure is the official word for blue. You can use it as an adjective (an azure sea) or as a noun (a stretch of azure). It does not mean dark blue, and it does not mean green-blue. Though actually, paint companies now put “azure” on all sorts of blues, so shop labels are looser than the old meaning.

組成From Middle English asure, from Old French azur. That French word came from Arabic lāzaward, “lapis lazuli” (a deep-blue stone). French speakers dropped the first sound l, as if it were only the French word for “the.” The Arabic came from Persian lājward, from a place called Lajward in Badakhshan where the stone was found. Italian azzurro and Spanish azul are cousins of the same word.
