組成From Middle English asure, from Old French azur. That French word came from Arabic lāzaward, “lapis lazuli” (a deep-blue stone). French speakers dropped the first sound l, as if it were only the French word for “the.” The Arabic came from Persian lājward, from a place called Lajward in Badakhshan where the stone was found. Italian azzurro and Spanish azul are cousins of the same word.
